Signs that your child is in pain
Assessing pain in kids may be harder than it seems, since they can only go as far as verbalizing what they feel. Next is to check for tenderness. You can do this by applying gentle pressure on the area, and see how your child reacts to this. If he flinches, lets out a little sob, or verbalizes that he is in pain, then that should mean that the area is tender. The second aspect that you should look out for is the presence of pain when urinating or when he seems to have difficulty in passing urine or stool. Be sure that you are there when he pays the potty a visit in order to check in on this. If he seems to have a problem in this aspect, then you should contact medical help immediately.
Third, check if your child has fever, is bleeding, or is having an inflammation of any sort. If he is febrile then the problem might be better brought over to the attention of your family doctor. Bleeding and inflammation are definitely red flags, so make sure you have that in check too.
Managing your child’s pain
Unfortunately, having confirmed or disproved the presence of lower back pain is not where everything should end; as a matter of fact, it should only be a basis of your next steps. If pain is positive, then you should consider the following measures before heading out to the hospital:
1. Cold application
This can be done by pressing ice packs subtly against the area of concern, and should be done within the first 48 hours since the onset of pain. Thereafter, heat application may be done with the use of heat wraps or disposable heat packs.
Naturally, any injured part or area should be allowed to rest during the next few hours, and sometimes, even days. This would allow the area to heal; however, you should be careful not to overdo the resting.
3. Pain medications
Pain medications do help a great deal with pain relief, but always remember that aspirin should never be administered to patients who are under 20 years old. This is to prevent any risk of Reye’s syndrome from developing.
