There are many things that can go wrong during pregnancy. There are common and routine problems, while there are others as well which can seriously affect the mother’s and child’s health. And while some conditions can be treated successfully by an ob/gyn or primary care physician, others require the care of a specialist.
Chiropractors are well-known for adjusting misaligned joints in the body, following the belief that most body pains—specifically in the back, shoulder, neck, and head—are caused by spinal misalignment. But how can this help pregnant women?
One of the most common medical complaints during pregnancy is back pain. It’s not surprising really, given that once a pregnant woman reaches the late second trimester, the fetus becomes bigger and heavier. All of the added weight, including the water, alters one’s centre of gravity and causes back pain.
What a chiropractor does is identify which specific vertebra or vertebrae are out of whack due to the added weight put on the lower back. Once it has been identified, a practitioner of chiropractic treatment will then bring the vertebrae back into alignment, do a deep tissue massage in the area surrounding it, apply ultrasound or TENS, and then give advice to the pregnant woman on how to reduce the risk of getting low back pain again. It means giving tips on posture and what right kind of exercise to do, among others.
Other more complicated problems that can arise are ectopic pregnancy (symptoms are bleeding and abdominal pain in one side), pre-eclampsia (caused by high blood pressure, symptoms include blurry eyesight and fluid retention), placental abruption (placenta becomes detached from the uterus walls), and premature labour which can be fatal to either the mother or the child.
A miscarriage is also a very common occurrence, particularly in women who give birth to their firstborn past the age of 35. The older she gets, the higher the risk. Birth defects and disorders are also very real complications for older mothers.
While chiropractic care has no direct role in the treatment process of these medical problems, it can and does help pregnant women avoid them in the first place. Chiropractic techniques are meant not only to treat, but to prevent medical issues as well. It is holistic, which means that it doesn’t only look at the problematic aspect of the body, but treats it as part of a whole.
Regular chiropractic care will not 100% ensure uneventful pregnancies. However, it does prepare the body to deal with these kinds of problems in the future. It makes sure that the body and all its parts and systems are kept in tiptop shape, to be able to face potential complications confidently later on.
