Four Reasons To Use Alternative Pain Relief Treatments

Traditional over the counter pain relief treatments such as paracetamol, ibuprofen & asprin have a proven record of being effective on a wide range of painful conditions. However there may be various reasons why these more traditional methods of pain relief are not right for certain people.

Here are 4 good reasons why people might choose and alternative pain relief treatment.

1)      Drug Allergies

Certain drugs can cause allergic reactions in some people, pain killers are no exception. Drug allergies can be one reason why people may choose an alternative method of pain relief. Aspirin is a common drug which can cause allergic reactions such as skin rashes, runny nose and difficulty breathing.

Being diagnosed with drug allergies can be difficult, there is currently no reliable blood test which can highlight exactly which drugs you are allergic to. The most common way to determine if somebody is allergic to a certain drug is to introduce the drugs into the blood stream under strict medical supervision.

2)      Pregnancy

Using over the counter and prescription drugs whilst pregnant may cause problems with the development of the foetus in the mother’s womb. Because of this there are many women who choose not to take traditional pain relief medication whilst they are pregnant.

TENs therapy is a common alternative method for women during pregnancy. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation has been clinically proven to help reduce pain, as a result it is a great alternative to drug treatment.

3)      Other  Medications

Another reason why people will seek an alternative treatment is because they are already taking a number of drugs. The effects of the pain relief drugs might be reduced or the opposite might happen where the medication they are already taking may stop working as effectively as a result of taking pain relief medication.

4)      Convenience

As you are probably aware, all over the counter drugs have a daily dosage limit applied to them, you cannot exceed the dosage recommended on the packaging. Because of this they effects of the drugs can wear off, leaving the sufferer in pain until it is “time” to take their next dose.

Most alternative therapies don’t have this problem, TEN’s therapy for example can be used as often as the sufferer requires it. Convenient pain relief whenever it is required.

What Is Available?

There are a number of alternative pain relief treatments available, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.

These methods include:

  • Hypnosis
  • TENs Therapy (mentioned earlier)
  • Acupuncture
  • Acupressure
  • Chiropractic Treatments and Massage (back pain specifically)
  • Herbal Medicines
  • Biofeedback
  • Naturopathy
  • Homeopathy

Whichever method you choose, be sure to consult your doctor before treatment begins.
