Comfortable Office Chairs Will Keep The Doctor Away

Before we discuss the features proprietary to the optimal office chair models, it is necessary to point out that there is a direct relationship between productivity and comfort levels. Considering that in the typical office settings employees will perform the vast majority of their tasks sitting down, ensuring they feel comfortable at work has a positive effect on their motivation and their ability to concentrate exclusively on their project rather than finding their position.

In addition, studies indicate that prolonged periods of sitting on uncomfortable furniture is the main cause of developing back problems, muscle strains, joint or ligament pain and other associated conditions. However, keep in mind that the physical conformation of the staff members varies, so there is no one size fits all solution.

Therefore, the chief aspect to consider is whether the elevation of the chair’s seat can be efficiently adjusted in order to adapt to the person’s height. The chairs are most frequently adjusted using a lever which is positioned underneath the seat, but some models incorporate other methods. It is commonly believed (and anecdotic evidence suggests it is true) that the optimal elevation has been obtained when the feet of the person sitting in the chair are firmly on the ground and the thighs are parallel with the flooring.

With regards to the backrests, the height of the seated person also plays a major role. Therefore, the backrest should also be customizable in terms of inclination angle and height. There are two distinct possibilities here: either the backrest is fastened together with the seat or the two parts can move independently. In the first case, the backrest only has forward-backward mobility and there is probably a lock that prevents unwanted, sudden tilts. For the former models, the inclination as well as the elevation of the component are adjustable and it accounts for an enhanced versatility of customizing the position.

Lumbar support (and particularly a type of chair that matches the spinal shape of the owner) is another important aspect. The role of the lumbar support is essentially to remove some of the pressure placed on your spine and avoid the development of back pains associated with prolonged seating. However, the construction of the lumbar support should determine the lower portion of your back to adopt an arched position in order to be effective. Armrests are incorporated for similar reasons, but their role is to minimize the strain placed on the shoulders and the neck, rather than the lower back.

The width of the seat and its depth make all the difference in the world when it comes to comfort. If you find yourself unable to decide on the optimal width and depth, try to remember the following guideline: the deep seats are suitable for tall people, while the shallow seats are preferred by individuals with medium to limited heights. And, because of the extended period of seating down, the material covering the padding needs to be breathable. With regards to softness, neither extreme will prove comfortable in the long run, so it is advisable to opt for padding with a median level of elasticity.
