Cold Laser Therapy: A Soothing Solution

back pain treatment using cold laserGone are the days when medicine was the only treatment option to pain and inflammation. A new type of pain remedy, known as cold laser therapy, is now on the market and is rapidly gaining in popularity. As a relatively new procedure, this type of therapy displays many advantages, as well as a few shortcomings. Yet, for patients who experience chronic pain, inflammation, or require some form of wound healing, cold laser therapy may be a viable treatment option.

Description of this Procedure

As a device that is approved as an experimental treatment, cold lasers have been deemed acceptable to use in investigational studies based on their pain-relieving abilities. Though cold laser therapy usually consists of targeting the specific area where pain is presented, it can also be used for acupuncture. When utilized in this fashion, the laser beams can be used to target pressure points in place of traditional needles. As a result, utilizing cold laser therapy in this manner can be appealing to those who wish to try acupuncture but are afraid of the use of needles.

In addition, cold laser therapy can also be used for those who are trying to quit smoking. Theoretically, the treatment relaxes the smoker and releases in endorphins to mimic the effects of nicotine in the brains of patients. Despite claims that this therapy can help patients kick this habit, physicians disregard the use of cold laser therapy for this treatment, arguing that there is no scientific evidence to support these claims.

Variations Between Cold Laser Therapy and Other Laser Treatments

Numerous types of laser and therapies that claim to rid patient’s of various illnesses can make it difficult to detect effective laser treatment options. While some claim to cure certain conditions, the “lasers” are little more than light effecting diodes (LED lights). Therefore, it is crucial to follow FDA approvals and rejections pertaining to laser therapy types. In addition, it is also important not to confuse this type of laser therapy with other forms, such as hot laser treatments, that are essential for controlling serious illnesses. For example, hot laser treatments can be used to reduce tumors and shrink cancer cells; yet, cold laser treatments are not capable of producing such results.

Advantages of Cold Laser Therapy

Although cold laser therapy is still being researched and may not produce results that are as extensive as other laser treatments, it definitely produces results that can be beneficial to a wide array of patients. Though cold laser therapy is a non-invasive procedure, it does require a small incision. However, there is no prolonged recovery time, and the therapy does not require the consumption of medication. In addition, studies have found that cold laser therapy does not generate any serious side effects when performed properly by a doctor.
